The term "mild steel" is used to describe low-carbon steel. While mild steel is still strong and tough, it can be further strengthened by the process of carburising - a heat treatment using a source of carbon. The steel is malleable, weldable and ductile, as well as being cost-effective and relatively easy to form. No wonder it's a popular choice in the construction industry.

Where is mild steel used?
Mild steel has many applications that include construction (especially to meet seismic or wind requirements), machine parts and pipelines.
As mild steel is difficult to break and easy to form, it is also used in sculptures and outdoor designs (e.g. fences). To prevent corrosion, it is usually galvanised or painted. You probably use or see mild steel products every day in wires, nails, decorations, and many furniture elements. Even road signs are made of low carbon steel!
Because of its high amount of iron and ferrite, this type of steel can be magnetic which makes it the perfect choice to create a magnetic board with.
